Bulldog or Bull

bulldog or bull
senator frank lautenberg calls
newly elected governor jonathan corzine
a bulldog. meaning he is tenacious
when he wants something done.
lautenberg points to corzine's
boyhood and to his rise to corporate
power. corzine went to the senate
determined to fight for universal health care
and better public education.
apparently corzine went to a public
university and realizes that without
the remnants of roosevelt's new deal
he wouldn't have been able to
afford college.
so things are looking good, according
to all this.
and there's more. a rider university
political scientist says that since corzine
spent $100 million of his own money
to become governor he's beholden to none
of the big financial/political bosses.
let's hope this is the case.
at princeton university's chapel
yesterday corzine made big promises
as all politicians do. he said it's time to chip away
at new jersey's reputation as the most corrupt
state in the union. he will apparently fight against
the "pay-to-play" cronyism that has the state
against the wall.
yet thomas kean says that this is mostly
talk, pointing to former governor jim florio's
inaugural promises to reform new jersey before having
to resign his office.
hold me accountable says governor corzine.
and i hope we do.

Crazy Corzine

a jersey poem
this is a first shot, a first look at politics
in new jersey, more a first intimation
of what that "other world" is up to
as we poets, artists, workers,
moms, dads, kids, prisoners,
whores, crazies, losers, dreamers
suffer the actions of
politicians.
but is this fair?
are there no good politicians
in new jersey?
what about codey? he looks like a nice
enough "average joe." i read recently
that he scored a basket from half court
at some benefit game. i've read he
coaches basketball, in fact.
which in my mind tells me right off
that he knows kids and loves kids.
he's a teacher in the end.
how bad can that be?
and then corzine.
crazy corzine, maybe.
but probably a good enough kind
of crazy. for a millionaire he doesn't
seem too off the wall.
did i tell you this summer i was on my
bike in belmar early in the morning
on the boards. and there was jonathan
along with congressman palone, along with some
others, the little mayor of belmar
for instance, along with environmentalists,
along with some sexy women in business
suits (but to me
all women are by now "sexy").
and the press, of course, the press.
interviewing corzine about the bush idea
of drilling off the jersey shore for oil
possibilities.
corzine wore a dark blue suit, had that
close beard of his, his balding scalp,
his rimless glasses, but what i noticed
most of all i suppose were his shiny
expensive brown leather shoes.
does this tell me anything about
the man? it tells me he's at ease,
he's semi-suave, he's real enough.
but maybe the most interesting thing
i can say about corzine from this perspective
is his "connection" with carla katz.
now this is something to write about!
when i'd read about the senator's problems
regarding this woman and then saw her
photo in the asbury park press, i said
wo! i understand!
she is a looker, no doubt.
and dark.
and sexy as all hell.
no wonder corzine wrote off the half million
dollar loan so she could keep her house.
i'd have done the same.
love is love. desire is desire.
and so, this poem, an introduction,
is telling you, reader, at least corzine
has his passion in tact.
and such romance, such passion
speaks of a heart. a beating, human
heart that still knows pleasure
and hope.
any governor with these inside him
might actually help
new jersey.
